Facing the Fear: Five Tips for Public Speaking Success

Public speaking is like an onion.

It has many layers, and no matter how you cut it - it can get pretty stinky if it’s not done right.

Some think speaking doesn’t take much effort. “I’ll just wing it,” they say. I don’t recommend this route. If a presenter is unprepared, mistakes will happen. For others, (prepared or not) the thought of speaking publicly makes their hands sweat and knees knock.

No matter where you are on the communication spectrum - taking time to dissect the art of public speaking is a must.

But where to start? What to do?

As a communication professional, from television reporter, to public relations specialist, to keynote speaker - I recommend five tips to help shatter fears and build public speaking confidence. They help me. I hope they help you too.

1. The Audience Wants You to Succeed: That’s right, they do. While they may not give you a standing ovation as you approach the microphone, know that they are rooting for you. People want to learn, be inspired and be motivated. And they want to hear what you have to say. Never forget that.

2. Find Opportunities to Speak: You don’t have to speak in an amphitheater or stadium packed with people. Instead, how about a book club? A small group meeting? Your workplace? Each time you present, your public speaking confidence will grow.

3. Pause: When delivering a presentation, we tend to talk fast. Chalk it up to nervous energy! Strategic pausing allows you to catch your breath, slow down, and keep things conversational. It also helps emphasize important parts of your message.

4. Don’t Apologize: If you are feeling sick, tired, or nervous don’t make this mistake: “Please forgive me, I’m not feeling well, apologies in advance.” Speakers often apologize before presenting. It may be a defense mechanism to combat anxiety, however – it does not improve credibility. Saying “sorry,” before you talk creates doubt in the mind of the audience. Remember, you have something important to say. Share it with joy!

5. Smile: Smiling increases likability and improves your mood. It can also help win the audience over before you speak. Enjoy the moment. This is your time to shine!
